In partnership with the Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE), UCF Continuing Education offers the Photonics Certificate Program designed for anyone interested in gaining knowledge in the Photonics field and in earning a certificate.The Photonics Certificate Program consists of six online courses and one hands-on lab that prepares participants for the growing Photonics field.
Requirements: Participants are required to have completed a high school degree or equivalency diploma in order to participate in the program, with key competencies in mathematics and general science subjects.

What is Photonics?
Photonics is the science and technology of generating, controlling, and detecting photons, or particles of light. From cell phones to laser eye surgery, discoveries in the field of photonics have significantly impacted nearly every aspect of our daily lives. Photonics is an enabling technology for almost every industry, including energy, lighting, healthcare, robotics, biometric security, semiconductor manufacturing, next-generation displays, communications and astronomy.
Future Need for Photonics Technicians
The current size and projected future growth of the photonics industry and its enabling impact on nearly every market that is key to the future economy of Florida – from energy to medicine to communications to aerospace – makes it essential that Florida maintain and grow its technological and business leadership in this field.
The size of the global laser market alone is forecast by the publication Laser Focus World to exceed $6.3B in 2009. The current economic impact of the photonics industry in Florida is significant*:
• 271+ photonics companies, with over 27,000 jobs impact on Florida’s employment
• $130 million annually in photonics-specific procurement
• $3.6 billion impact on Florida’s Gross State Product
• $7.2 billion impact on Florida’s annual sales activity (economic output)
Approximately 25% of the 270+ photonics companies in Florida employ photonics technicians. According to a survey reported in the 2008 Report on Florida’s Photonics Cluster*, “Responding companies expected to increase their existing photonics workforce roughly 10% in 2009, with a slightly greater demand for certificate and technician-level workers over workers with higher degrees. This trend was projected to continue over the next 36 months, with the photonics workforce expected to grow by roughly 9% per year and the greatest need demand being shown for technicians.”
