Speaking, Spelling, and Counting in Spanish

¡Bienvenidos! (Welcome!) In the first lesson, you'll master the building blocks of Spanish. First, you'll discover how easy it is to spell and pronounce words en español. After that, you'll learn how to count from 0 to 19.

Family, Pronouns, and Easy Conversational Phrases

La familia is central to Latin American life, and knowing "who's who" can be a big help when you're talking with witnesses, crime victims, or suspects. In this lesson, you'll learn the Spanish words for family members, and pick up some easy conversational phrases you can use every day on the job. In addition, the lesson will talk about pronouns and explore the role of gender in Spanish.

Colors, Directional Words, and Numbers From 20 to 199

What color was the suspect's car? Which way did he go? How fast was he driving? After this lesson, you'll be able to answer all these questions easily en español. The lesson will start by talking about the Spanish words for colors and then move on to directional words (with some prepositions thrown in as a bonus). After that, you'll learn how to count all the way to 199.

    Easy Verbs

Law enforcement professionals are always on the go—so you'll want lots of action words in your Spanish vocabulary. To help you use Spanish verbs easily, this lesson will introduce you to a simple conjugation system that uses only three tenses (present, easy past, and easy future). In addition, you'll look at two interesting verbs that mean "to be:" ser and estar.

Vocabulary for Describing People, Objects, and Feelings

Asking questions is a big part of your job, and in this lesson, you'll find out how to query your witnesses or suspects en español. After that, you'll look at powerful words for describing objects, people, and feelings. Finally, you'll master the very important little word hay—something you'll definitely want to add to your repertoire.

Words for Describing People's Appearance, Clothes, and the Weather

In this lesson, you'll add more high-octane words to your vocabulary for talking about people. You'll learn how to describe their ages, their hair colors, their ethnicity, their legal status, and even what they're wearing. In addition, the lesson will talk about the weather en español. It will also introduce you to four handy little words—este, esta, ese, and esa—that will help you stretch out your sentences.

Time, the Calendar, and Body Parts

It's time to talk about . . . time! In this lesson, you'll discover how to talk about the hours of the day, the days of the week, and the months of the year in Spanish. As a bonus, you'll learn how to identify the major parts of the body and obtain answers in emergencies by asking questions like "Where does it hurt?," "Are you ill?," and "What happened?"

    Talking About Places and Things

Whether you're taking dispatch calls or walking a beat, you need to be familiar with your neighborhood—so in this lesson, you'll tour the buildings and places in a typical town. In addition, you'll explore a house inside and out and take a look at the objects you're likely to find there. The lesson will also talk a little about weights and measures, including the metric measures many Spanish speakers use.

    Legal and Illegal Professions

This lesson's topic is professions—both legal and illegal. You'll start by looking at Spanish words for emergency responders and law enforcement professionals. After that, you'll meet some additional professionals and learn their names en español. Next, you'll investigate words for criminals and check out the weapons they're likely to use. Just for fun, the lesson will also talk a bit about Spanish first and last names—which can be pretty confusing when you're trying to file paperwork.

    Describing Vehicles and Traffic Violations

Speeders, drunk drivers, red-light runners—you'll meet all of them in this lesson. You'll begin with a quick look at words for describing drivers who are under the influence of alcohol or drugs. After that, you'll discover lots of phrases to describe specific traffic violations. You'll also explore the names for different types of vehicles and learn one word you won't want to use to describe people who break the rules of the road.

    Dealing With Criminal Suspects

In this lesson, you'll learn lots of useful commands for getting people to do what you want—from polite commands like "sit down" to forceful ones like "Up against the wall!" Let's Speak Spanish

In our first lesson, we'll review Spanish pronunciation to take you closer to the target sounds you'll need to make when speaking Spanish. We'll review Strategy 1: Sentence Starters and Strategy 2: The Verb Hay, and you'll pick up an additional speaking template associated with Strategy 2. At the end of this lesson, your pronunciation will be better, and you'll know how to apply Strategies 1 and 2 to a variety of Spanish-speaking situations.

    Living in the Past

We'll spend quite a bit of time in this course talking about the past tense, and that topic starts in this lesson. Once you finish this lesson, you'll know when to apply our first five strategies - Sentence Starters, Hay, ¿Donde Está?, Tengo/Tiene, and Quiero/Quiere - to present and past tense Spanish-speaking situations.

    Get Into the Present

Today, you'll learn the past tense of Strategy 6: Me/Le Gusta and all about Strategy 7: Present Tense Verbs. You'll learn to pick up the pace by using exercises to help build up your speed in moving from one Strategy to another. When you've completed this lesson, you'll know lots of vocabulary words, a lot more verbs, more fun phrases, and perhaps most important of all, you'll know how to use Strategies 1 through 7 in any Spanish-speaking situation.

    Putting It All Together

In this lesson, you'll learn to link your Strategies so that you're able to move from one Strategy to another without hesitation. Once you're able to do this, you're on your way to becoming more fluent in Spanish. Even so, there will be times when you'll have a memory lapse or a verbal breakdown. Not to worry—today you'll also learn how to use breakdown phrases in Spanish, making it appear that you think in Spanish!

    You Talking to Me?

You'll be able to reach out and embrace other people in your Spanish conversations after you finish this lesson. By practicing Strategy 7: Present Tense Verbs, you'll learn a range of ways to incorporate other people into your Spanish.

    Being Informal

Today, you'll continue to practice incorporating other people into your Spanish conversations. But in this lesson, you'll also learn to carry on a conversation with some depth because you'll be able to reduce your sentences to short, crisp bursts.

    I've Seen the Future

Today, we're going to use Strategies 1 and 7 to talk about the future. Besides having fun with Strategies 1 and 7 and the future tense, you'll learn all about Strategy 8, which teaches you to create sentences in Spanish using would.. When this lesson is complete, you'll be able to get into the past, the present, the future, and the conditional.

    Learning to Compare

While the focus of this course is to help you learn strategies for constructing Spanish sentences, you'll learn a considerable amount of vocabulary along the way. In this lesson, you'll take a pause from the strategies to learn to string adjectives together. When you've completed this lesson, you'll be able to speak like a poet—if you want to!

    Reviewing Our Strategies

Today, you'll learn why so-called irregular verbs are not as irregular as you may have thought. There's a pattern to their irregularity. By applying Strategy 7: Present Tense Verbs to these irregular Spanish verbs, you'll learn to use them in no time at all. You'll also practice most of the strategies you've learned so far to become even more efficient when conversing with Spanish speakers.

    Let's Add Some Movement

In this lesson, you'll learn all about Strategy 9, which teaches you how to add -ing to a verb in Spanish. This strategy will help you become a highly capable storyteller, making past and present events more interesting to your listeners. When you finish this lesson, you'll have what it takes to say what you want to say with style and color.

    Being Possessive

Today, you'll learn all the different ways to produce possessive expressions. You might know how to translate My house is your house, but do you know how to translate phrases like: This is mine, not yours. Whose is this? Is this hers? Oh, it's theirs, not ours. This lesson will show you how. You'll also get some time to practice the strategies and you'll even pick up more vocabulary and fun phrases.

    More Verbs

Throughout all our lessons, we'll follow the story of Daniel's experiences with David Smith, Señor Macias, and Platero. In today's lesson, the adventure comes to a surprising climax, but not before you learn all about Strategy 10, which is a way to express past tense. Armed with Strategies 1 through 10, you'll be ready to go out and find some Spanish speakers to talk to!

    Welcome

There are many sounds in Spanish that we don't have in English, so we'll start our first lesson by practicing pronunciation. What's more, we'll practice Strategies 1: Sentence Starters and Strategy 2: Hay, meaning there is/are. We'll extend Strategy 2 so you can further express yourself in the past tense. After this lesson, your pronunciation will improve, and you'll be even better at applying Strategies 1 and 2.

    There Was a Party

In this lesson, you'll be introduced to the preterite tense. You'll learn when and how to use the preterite and the imperfect tense when describing events that happened in the past. You'll also learn an assortment of time phrases that will help reinforce your use of the past tense. When you're finished, you'll appreciate how the Spanish language carves up events and situations that have occurred in the past.

    Transitions

In this lesson, you'll review and practice several of the strategies you learned in previous lessons. These strategies will polish your speaking and writing skills, teaching you what it takes to transition smoothly from one to another.

    Are You Ready?

The verb ser, meaning to be, has peculiar verb forms. In this lesson, you'll learn those different forms framed against its partner verb, estar, which also means to be. After practicing this lesson's helpful drills, you'll know when to use ser and when to use estar. We'll also practice Strategy 4 using the verb tener, which means to have, and we'll learn some extended verb forms. After this lesson, you'll know all there is to know about Strategies 1 through 4!

    Do You Want a Break?

During previous lessons, you've been learning and reviewing vocabulary while improving your pronunciation skills. This lesson is no different, but the focus will be on distinguishing the preterite from the imperfect past tenses. We will focus on the verbs querer, meaning to want, and gustar, meaning to like. When you finish this lesson, you'll know the full range of Strategies 1 through 6, preterite and all.

    Flying to Guadalajara

In today's lesson, you'll learn a few new verbs while reviewing Strategies 1 through 6. After that, we'll move on to an in-depth review of Strategy 7: Present Tense and More, which will give you options for presenting past events. Accompanying this lesson are practice drills designed to improve your ability to respond spontaneously in Spanish. You're now midway through the course, so you'll want to practice what you're learning with native Spanish speakers.

    I Already Did It

In this lesson, we'll review the complete range of Strategy 7: Present Tense and More. You'll also learn several commonly used short phrases associated with Strategy 7 and how to apply Strategy 7 to hacer/dar/decir verbs, which you'll use regularly. Besides learning more about Strategy 7, we'll review Strategies 1 through 6. After completing this lesson, you'll feel comfortable using irregular Spanish verbs because you'll understand their underlying patterns.

    Spanish is Spoken Here

Spanish has flexible word order with some constraints, so in this lesson, you'll learn how and when to change the word order. We'll review Strategy 8 and introduce you to Strategy 9, which can be referred to as the Se Habla Español strategy. You'll practice the passive voice in Spanish, and later, you'll review reflexive verbs.

    I Don't Care

Remember in the first Speed Spanish course when you learned all about the particles, lo/la/me? Later, in Speed Spanish II, we expanded on them. Now you've made it all the way to Speed Spanish III, and it's time to learn the full range of particle uses. You'll learn to incorporate these new particles into your conversations, and, as always, we'll practice our strategies. Then, you'll learn many new verbs you can use in everyday Spanish conversations.

    We'll See

In this lesson, we'll review a strategy for applying the conditional tense to use would verb phrases. Besides learning more about Strategy 10, you'll learn a new strategy that will help you to express the future: Strategy 11. As we'll do in every lesson, we'll introduce new vocabulary words. We'll pay special attention to ser and ir in this lesson, too. When you're finished, you'll have completed Strategies 1 - 11!

    ¡Viva Las Vegas!

In this lesson, you'll build on what you've learned previously by practicing the -ing form of verbs in Strategy 12. You'll also learn an easier way to express the past tense in Strategy 13 and attempt to crack the por and para code that causes difficulty for many Spanish learners. This lesson also starts to lay the foundation for the subjunctive tense by learning key phrases. After you finish this lesson, you'll have learned Strategies 1 through 13!

    Man Overboard!

In this final lesson, you'll be introduced to Strategy 14, which helps you practice your commands. If you've ever heard the phrase, Viva Las Vegas, you've made the first step toward learning the subjunctive tense, which is Strategy 15. You'll also learn the present subjunctive when expressing emotion and doubt. When you complete this final lesson, you'll have learned a total of 15 Strategies that will help you speak more fluent Spanish! You now have the tools to read, write, and express yourself in Spanish.
